Regular internal audit and reporting of outcomes data occurs at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Data should be reviewed in context. Complex tumour operations or revision operations are unfortunately more likely to have complications compared to simple first-time spinal disc surgery, for example. Therefore hospitals which perform the more complex operations are likely to have higher complication rates than others which do not offer a complex service.
